About the DAUG

The German-Afghan University Association (DAUG) is a non-profit association based in Bonn, Germany, which was founded in September 2002 by German and Afghan professors. The two countries have been linked by a long-standing academic friendship with regular exchanges since the 1960s and 1970s.

During this time, for example, a team of mainly German academics worked at  the Kabul University.

DAUG emerged from the initiative of participating scientists to support academic reconstruction at Afghanistan’s universities after September 11, 2001.

How it all began

More than 100 years of German-Afghan relations

German-Afghan relations began with the Niedermayer-Hentig expedition to Kabul in 1915.

The basis of the German-Afghan educational partnerships was the opening of the “Royal Amani Secondary School” in Kabul in 1924, where German teachers also taught.

In 1962, Kabul University established partnerships with the universities in Cologne, Bonn and Bochum.
